This is a very interesting and very impressive lab design and build in Conwy, Wales, in the UK, the total cost was over GBP£2.5 million.

It was designed and completed by IAB Lab, a specialist British company, you can read the full specification and process of this lab design and build on their website.

The following is a brief summary of this impressive project.

The lab is a specialist lab for the Geosciences (petroleum and oil exploration) industry and was a complete design and build from the ground up.

The lab, storage, and office spaces were built in an industrial unit or warehouse facility which was stripped back to a shell to accommodate the new facilities.

In total there are 2300 square meters of floor space, this being an increase from 1440 square meters achieved with the introduction of mezzanine decks.

The new lab facility is a complete turnkey solution incorporating a specialist water discharge plant, full HVAC system, specialist gas services, and water treatment plant among many other features (the full list is on the page linked to above).

Clearly working with geophysical samples involves many hazardous processes and requires the use of dangerous chemicals, and the laboratory has been designed to accommodate these requirements, with wash stations, recirculating water wash fume cupboards, fume extract systems, water treatment, and recirculating air conditioning in each lab.

The facility also provides changing areas, laundry area, and storage locations for acids, chemicals, and emergency equipment.

The laboratory truly is a real turnkey solution, designed for a specific application and is well worth looking at fully on IAB’s website to get a clearer idea of what can be achieved, and how careful planning and implementation can produce a state of the art, bespoke laboratory that is ideal for any application in any industry.
